Area Information

Colville was founded in 1882 when Fort Colville was abandoned. The first school, a hand-hewn log building, is presently at the Keller Historical Center. Colville was officially incorporated in 1890 and was named after Fort Colville, which was named for Andrew Colville, an official of the Hudson's Bay Company.

Stevens County was named for the states first territorial governor, Isaac I. Stevens. The Stevens County courthouse was completed in July 1939. Colville Washington is located at the junction of US 395 and State Highway 20 in Stevens County and 40 miles south of the Canadian border.

Colville, with a population of approximately 5,000, is a principal city and the seat of Stevens County, which has a population of 37,600. The population of Stevens County has grown dramatically since 1970.

There are several reasons for this increase. The county has a large amount of forested acreage available at low prices; and the forests, streams and lakes, along with four distinct seasons, appeal to urban residents for home sites. Also, a number of new industries and retail trade establishments have been constructed here, and existing companies have expanded all creating new jobs.

This area enjoys a true 4-season climate. Annual rainfall occurs on an average of 17 inches.  Annual snowfall is 48 inches. The splendid valley locations rimmed by glorious mountains, sparkling lakes and abundant trees along with the 4-seasons provide excellent hunting, fishing, boating and swimming activities. The county has a large amount of forested acreage available at low prices; and the forests, streams and lakes, along with four distinct seasons, appeal to urban residents for home sites.

Cultural facilities include museums, libraries, community centers, historical sites, performing arts centers and more. Activities and special events range from the Northeast Washington Fair, rodeos, Rendezvous Days at the Park, antique car shows, an annual art show, golf tournaments, gaming at Stevens County casinos and skiing at nearby resorts.

Nationally recognized and updated educational facilities in Stevens County have brought many new families here. Colville has 6 public schools and 3 private schools. There's also a community college in Colville and four 4-year colleges and two 2-year colleges in Spokane.

Colville is also noted for its fine medical facilities. Its dental facilities are also excellent.

The economy is supported by agriculture, lumbering, manufacturing and service industries, plus numerous governmental, educational and medical facilities. The black loam soil of the highly productive Colville Valley, together with fertile bench lands, make this area well suited for agriculture.

Most of the Tri-County area is national or state forest. It provides horseback riding, cross country skiing, snowmobiling, hiking and more as well as deer, elk, bear and bird hunting. Lake Roosevelt (Grand Coulee Dam backwaters) stretches 150 miles up the Columbia River and features great fishing and water sports, as do the many other lakes, streams and rivers in the area.

Colville National Forest literally surrounds Colville and has 370 miles of snowmobile trails; 97 miles of cross country trails, 426 miles of hiking and horseback riding trails, and 370 miles of mountain bike trails. There are also a number of fine picnic and camping areas at resorts and public campgrounds on the banks of many area lakes.

Stevens County has 306 lakes, 315 ponds, 125 marshes and swampy areas and 175 creeks. You can angle for some 23 different fish species in the area surrounding Colville. Golfers will love the Annual Colville Chamber Golf Scramble at Dominion Meadows.
