The first white man in the area that is now Colville
Washington was David Thompson, who came in 1811
to explore the Columbia River for the Northwest Fur Company. During that first year, some 11,000 pounds
of furs were shipped to London.

Colville was founded in 1882 when Fort Colville was abandoned. The first school, a hand-hewn log building, is presently at the Keller Historical Center. Colville was officially incorporated in 1890 and was named after Fort Colville, which was named for Andrew Colville, an official of the Hudson's Bay Company. Stevens County was named for the states first territorial governor, Isaac I. Stevens. The Stevens County courthouse was completed in July 1939.
  

Colville Washington is located at the junction of US 395 and State Highway 20 in Stevens County and 40 miles south of the Canadian border.

   
Colville, with a population of approximately 5,000, is a principal city and the seat of Stevens County, which
has a population of 37,600. The population of Stevens County has grown dramatically since 1970. There are several reasons for this increase. The county has a large amount of forested acreage available at low prices; and the forests, streams and lakes, along with four distinct seasons, appeal to urban residents for home sites. Also, a number of new industries and retail trade establishments have been constructed here, and existing companies have expanded all creating new jobs.
